Programming Picks: Autumn, a storyteller’s dream

September 3, 2026

Autumn has always been a favourite season for theatre-goers. There’s the slight chill in the air, jumpers unpacked, candles lit at dusk. Storytelling always works best when light is low and company is close.

As ever, we’ve put together a jam-packed programme with something for everyone, which is no mean feat. We stage five events a week in the Main House alone, alongside a full programme of theatre, music and comedy on a smaller scale in the Studio.

Theatres and arts venues across the country are only just surviving right now, and we want to be thriving. If you believe Taunton Brewhouse is central to community and connection in Taunton and Somerset, and if you want exciting, live entertainment on your doorstep please join us. Book tickets, spread the word, keep the arts alive. We can’t do this without you. And if you’re feeling generous, our Fit at 50 campaign is still going strong no donation is too small to help us secure the future of the arts in Somerset.

First in our line-up of recommendations —

Lovett – 19 Sep

You’ll know Sweeney Todd’s story: the demon barber of Fleet Street. But what about Mrs Lovett, and her exquisite skills in carving and deboning? This one-woman powerhouse of a show puts her centre stage, perfect for history lovers and anyone who wants their drama atmospheric.

Southern Sinfonia : Inside The Orchestra – 30 Sep

What does it feel like to sit inside an orchestra — close enough to see the bows moving, feel the rhythm, hear the sound bloom around you? This relaxed, welcoming event from Southern Sinfonia, the South West’s professional chamber orchestra, invites a lucky few to sit on stage in and among the players. Lights stay up, the tone stays informal, and the conductor talks you through the instruments and the stories behind the music — perfect for first-timers, families, and anyone who wants a close up on classical music.

& Sons – 12 Oct

A world-renowned but reclusive novelist, convinced he’s about to die, summons his estranged sons home. But instead of the forgiveness they’re expecting, he drops a secret that pulls his beloved ex-wife straight back into the family’s orbit. Decades of resentment, jealousy and rage come to a head in this darkly comedic drama, led by a stacked cast: Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, George MacKay, Dominic West, Johnny Flynn and rising star Noah Jupe. Perfect for anyone who loves a family drama with sharp wit and real bite.

The Story of Swing – 15 Oct

From the Ratpack to Robbie, Basie to Bublé — award-winning vocalist and trumpeter Gareth John and the SOS Big Band take you on a musical journey through decades of swing and big band classics. Expect the crooner hits of Sinatra and Darin alongside modern favourites from Bublé and Robbie Williams. The nostalgic, timeless nature of swing music pairs perfectly with the golden hues and reflective mood of the autumn season.

Coco – 30 Oct

Ever wanted to experience Mexico’s dia de los muertos? Imagine the vibrant colors, the music, and the magic. Now you can experience it on the big screen! Join aspiring musician Miguel as he defies his family’s ancestral ban on music and journeys into the stunning Land of the Dead to uncover his true history. Coco is a heartfelt, visually spectacular Pixar adventure for all ages—the perfect treat for the October half-term.

Made In Tennessee – 31 Oct

As we pay our respects to the late, great Dolly Parton, Soul Street Productions’ sell-out show gives country fans a taste of Nashville, taking you through decades of the genre with a band of the UK’s finest country musicians. From Johnny, June, Dolly and Hank through to Kacey Musgraves and Chris Stapleton — the best show east of Tennessee.

There’s something for everyone. There always is.
