After incredible success in 2023, Taunton Youth Culture and Arts Festival is back with a bang!

TYCA 2024 will be one of the most spectacular youth arts festivals Taunton has ever seen. This colourful carnival of creativity will showcase original music, theatre, dance, circus, poetry, visual arts and more.

The very best up-and-coming local artists will perform alongside leading industry professionals, as well as grassroots community groups performing for the very first time. All artists are under 26 but this festival is truly for everyone!

TYCA operates on a Pay What You Can (PWYC) system. Come along for free or make a donation to keep events like this alive!

Somerset Youth Theatre Taunton Company:
The Assembly

Time: 12.15pm

Join us for this term’s celebration assembly – from rainbow clouds to pen licences – and celebrate the brilliant achievements of Taunton Triumphant Academy’s KS2 class of 2024!

Tuck your shirt in and clap along in this immersive part game/part performance, devised by SYT through memory and joys of nostalgia.

Somerset Youth Theatre CIC provides safer spaces for young people to create, explore and find their voice through theatre and the arts. They put young people at the heart of the making and co-create with professional performance makers. They do this because we believe that all young people’s voices matter.

Taunton Brewhouse Youth Theatre:
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Time: 4.15pm

A massive airborne albatross, a change in the weather, and the mercy of supernatural. In their very own interpretation of Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Taunton Brewhouse Youth Theatre once again bring the lyrical ballad back to life for a contemporary audience using mime, puppetry, and song.

Taunton Brewhouse Youth Theatre inspires, excites, and celebrates young people aged 7 to 19 years. Over each 10-week term, our three groups learn new skills, develop performance techniques, build confidence, and form new friendships. We are delighted to showcase the work of Group 3 as part of TYCA Festival.

The Detention by Madi Bouchta

Time: 7pm

‘This is a play that should be seen.’ – Around Wellington

The Detention is a new play inspired by The Breakfast Club and An Inspector Calls. It follows five students of opposite social status stuck in a Saturday detention. The suspicious Mr Fairton tells them they can only leave by telling each other why they are there. The only problem – none of them actually know why! As the clock ticks, they end up learning a lot more about themselves and each other than they originally imagined.

A deep and meaningful reflection of our times which will leave audiences laughing, crying and thinking twice about what’s below the surface of content-consuming, self-obsessed, chaotically unhinged teenagers today. After a sell-out run at the Wellington Arts Centre, the anticipated one-night-only revival of The Detention closes TYCA Festival 2024.

Written and directed by 18-year-old Madi Bouchta, a TYCA commissioned artist, and performed by an extremely talented cast of 17-19 year olds, this play is not to be missed.

Recommended for audiences 12+. Sensitive topics discussed, viewer discretion is advised. Please note, there is a minimum donation of £5 for this event. The recommended price is £15. However, no one will be turned away for lack of funds, so please email [email protected] if finance is a barrier.

TYCA 2024 has been made possible due to funding from Arts Taunton, Taunton Town Council and Arts Council England.
