Dry-point is an intaglio technique, in which an image is incised into a surface with a hard-pointed “needle”. The method is practically identical to engraving; except the difference is in the use of tools and that the raised ridge along the furrow is not scraped or filed away as in engraving. Traditionally the plate was copper, but now acetate, zinc, or polyurethane is also used.

This session will explore the dry-point technique through drawing on a piece of acrylic called Rhenalon. These plates are very versatile and afford the opportunity to experiment and explore various forms of making marks, creating an intaglio surface. The image is then printed via a printing press, using a range of oil-based printing inks, which will enable you to experiment with a range of colours on the acrylic surface.

All you need to bring with you for this session is an image to work from and your imagination. All materials and tools will be supplied by the tutor.
